About Us!

It Could Happen to Anyone!

John Ash and Mark Meddaugh, hosts of La Cuisine du Garage, feel obligated to explain to viewers why they’re cooking in a garage – not that there’s anything wrong with that! The show opens with:

Two guys. Three unfortunate accidents. Three kitchens burned down . . . in two years. It could happen to anyone. Now, because of a restraining order from an insurance company, recommendations of the fire inspector and complaints of others, they cook in the garage.

La Cuisine du Garage was born in 2003 on a “garage” set at Channel 14, a
public access television station in the Milwaukee suburb of West Allis, Wis.
Since then, the quirky, one-hour cooking program has grown to secure airtime on
public access TV stations in 35 cities across the Midwest, including Chicago, St.
Paul, Milwaukee and Madison.

La Cuisine du Garage is often described as an offbeat blend of a Food Network cooking show and Home Improvement, served up with a side of humor. The monthly 60-minute show features three to four recipes, cooking advice and tips, plus lots of wisecracks, humor, wacky trivia and skits. In the past four years, the show has covered Thai, Cajun, Mexican, French, Irish, Cuban, German, Indian, Chinese and every cuisine in between.

As garage cooks, Ash and Meddaugh sport tool belts stocked with whisks, spoons, can openers and other cooking implements. Their worktop is an old door set atop sawhorses, and the back wall is adorned with a pegboard sporting kitchen tools, Jell-O molds and old license plates.

John and Mark Are REALLY Close Friends

Ash and Meddaugh have been friends since high school. During their college years, they ran a summer window-cleaning and painting business. They both married women from the same Wisconsin city and have children the same age. They spent many a Sunday together for family cookouts and even started a Whiners Club that included a Whiners Club t-shirt, certificate and membership card for paying members. Coincidentally, the Whiners Club was “born” the year both of their wives were pregnant! To get La Cuisine du Garage started, they took a television production class together.

When they’re not on-air, Ash runs his own physical therapy business and does a good amount of the cooking at home. He loves to garden and once borrowed a Julia Child cookbook from the library to make coq au vin. It was that entrĂ©e that led to his interest in fine cooking.
